My front-line role
I am the Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Hatfield South division, this includes the village/ward of Welham Green as well as Hatfield South and much of Hatfield West wards. The 'Your community' section provides local service information, news, events and contacts about the area. Southern Hatfield is a vibrant and fast-changing community, strongly influenced by the University of Hertfordshire and the students who form many of the households in the area. The Uni also brings problems and issues, and I have been engaging with the University from day 1 to try and address some of these.
Welham Green has a real ‘village’ feel and the community are coming together to make the village even better. The Residents Association is doing sterling work getting community activities organised and I’m very pleased to have been able to help them achieve that.
In all I represent some 11,000 residents from about 6,000 homes, but also deal with issues raised by local businesses, traders, sports clubs and charities.
I have been active in keeping in touch with local residents through letters and FOCUS newsletters numerous times a year. Residents are invited to get in touch and let me know their views. The letters and newsletters report on what I have been doing on their behalf, much of it having been dominated by the anti-incinerator campaign. I hold regular meetings with local community groups in my division.
My County Council responsibilities
I was first elected for Hatfield South Division in 2013. I am also the Liberal Democrat Spokesman on Resources. I serve on the Policy, Resources and Transformation Cabinet Panel and also the Enterprise, Education and Skills Cabinet Panel.
Personal, professional and political details
I was born in 1967. I am married with two school-age children (one primary, one secondary). I moved from London to Hertfordshire (Hatfield) in 2003, having worked in Hertfordshire (Hatfield) since 1999.
I have worked, and still work part-time, at the University of Hertfordshire since 1999 and as a Senior Lecturer since 2003, having worked at another London-based University before that. My expertise is in Geographic Information and I am a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Before my time in Higher Education I spent ten years working as a race engineer in motor sports.
I joined the Liberal Democrats in 2006, the key ‘tipping point’ for me being the Serious and Organised Crime & Police Act, legislation that banned peaceful protest in a range of public places.
In 2010 I unsuccessfully stood for Parliament for the Welwyn Hatfield seat.
Between 2011 and 2013 I was the chair of the Liberal Democrats Hertfordshire co-ordinating organisation, a role I was constitutionally forced to leave upon election to the County Council.
I am a very keen motorsports fan and also enjoy fell-walking and travel.
