My front-line role

I am the Conservative County Councillor for Hitchin South division. The  ‘Your Community’ section provides local service information, news, events and contacts about the area.

I represent the interests of the 12,000 residents living in the town centre and the south of the town. I work closely with the North Herts District Councillors for the same areas; our Member of Parliament, the Rt Hon Peter Lilley, who lives locally; and active residents’ and local community groups.

Residents who wish to raise any issue with me are welcome to do so at any time, whether by e-mail, letter or telephone.

My County Council responsibilities

I am a member of the Cabinet and the Executive Member responsible for Environment, Planning & Transport.

Cabinet is responsible at law for most of the council’s policy decisions, but these are made in the light of recommendations from a range of cross-party Cabinet Panels.

Environment, Planning & Transport is a wide-ranging portfolio and encompasses the following:

Hertfordshire’s built and natural environment; countryside management; Lead Flood Authority; environmental intelligence; rights of way; climate change (excluding County Council estate and operations); leading for the County Council on the Hertfordshire Infrastructure and Planning Panel:  strategic planning; waste planning; minerals planning; airport policy: Local Transport Plan; leading for the County Council on the Local Transport Board; passenger transport: leading for the County Council on the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority.

Roles on outside bodies

I have a regional role representing Hertfordshire on the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority as well as serving on regional bodies representing my portfolio.  Locally, I have served as a school governor for 30 years and I am a trustee of a number of local charities including the Hitchin Educational Foundation which provides an endowment to the local secondary schools and local children of about £70,000 per annum. I have always taken a particular interest in planning issues and have campaigned to ensure Hitchin retains its character and is not overwhelmed by large scale development
