My front-line role

I am the Conservative Councillor for the Bridgewater Division. This covers a large geographic area with 144km of roads to give some context of size. The division spans from Flamstead and Markyate in the east through Nettleden and Potten End, Little and Great Gaddesdens, Northchurch onto the western side of Berkhamsted in the West.

As the county councillor for Bridgewater, I represent the interests of over 11,000 residents of these communities on Hertfordshire County Council. I work closely with the Dacorum Borough Councillors for the same areas; David Gauke MP for South West Hertfordshire and Rt. Hon. Mike Penning MP for Hemel Hempstead who lives in the town; together with the Parish Councils representing the rural communities.

Residents who wish to raise any issue with me are welcome to do so at any time, whether by e-mail, letter or telephone. I will always deal promptly with casework issues.

As is the case with every County Councillor, I have a locality budget to spend on community projects in the division. Follow the links for more details of the scheme and details of applications I have previously agreed and declined.

My County Council responsibilities

I am currently the Executive Member for Education, Libraries and Localism. Previously I have been the Deputy Executive Member for Education and Skills from 2009 and more recently the Executive Member for Highways and Waste Management. I am a member of the Cabinet which is responsible at law for most of the council’s policy decisions, but these are made in the light of recommendations from a range of cross-party Cabinet Panels.

My role involves me in a range of partnership networks in Hertfordshire. The Localism role involves the relationship with Parish and Town Councils throughout the county together with building relationships with the very many voluntary groups which do so much good work in Hertfordshire and provide a wide range of very valuable services.

The Council’s corporate policies are set out in the Corporate Plan. The plan sets out our ambition for Hertfordshire to be a county of opportunity for all its residents, through excellent education, opportunities for business and economic growth, an excellent environment in which to live and a good quality of life for all our residents.

Roles on outside bodies

I have a particular interest in education and school governance and have previously served as the Chairman of the GovernorLine Advisory Board and as a director of the National Governors Association. I am a member of Groundwork East and sit on the Management Committee of Chaulden Community Association.

Personal, professional and political details

I was born in London, moving to Hertfordshire at the age of five. I started my own business which continues to operate in the area and beyond for the supply, installation and operation of audio-visual, sound and lighting equipment in a range of environments where it is managed by my daughters. Previously I have been the Chairman and President of our trade association body representing rental companies throughout the UK. I have been a councillor in Dacorum Borough Council since 2007 and represent the Ashridge Ward which includes the Little Gaddesden and Nettleden with Potten End villages.

As a Dacorum councillor, I have held the portfolio for Planning and Regeneration and am currently the Vice-Chair of Finance and Resources committee. In the past I have also been the Chair of the Audit committee.

Away from politics, I am a season ticket holder at Watford Football Club which I have followed for the past 40 years.
