My front-line role

I am the Conservative Councillor for Rickmansworth East & Oxhey Park Division.

I represent the interests of 12,000 residents of Rickmansworth town, Carpenders Park, Moor Park and Oxhey Hall on the county Council.  My county division is unusual in that it falls within two different parliamentary constituencies.  I work closely with both Members of Parliament, David Gauke who represents South West Hertfordshire and Richard Harrington who represents Watford.

Whilst this division sits entirely within Three Rivers District, two areas, (Carpenders Park and Oxhey Hall) are in Watford Rural Parish Council and two (Moor Park and Rickmansworth East) are in the newly created Batchworth Parish Council.  I work closely with the District and Parish Councillors for those areas, and also with active residents’ associations and community groups.

Residents who wish to raise any issue with me are welcome to do so at any time, whether by email, letter or telephone. I will always deal as promptly as I can with casework issues.

My County Council responsibilities

I served as Chairman of the Council between 2015 and 2017.  Prior to 2015 I have held three Cabinet posts: for Customer Service, Performance and Libraries;  for Education & Skills;  and for Transformation. Details about my current committee work can be found in the tab above.

In the 1990s I was the first chairman of the County Council’s Standards Committee, before the Chairman had to be independent of the Council.  I have previously served on the former Police Authority.

Personal, Professional and political details

I have lived in my Division of Rickmansworth East & Oxhey Park for over 37 years.  My first degree is in mathematics and statistics, and I hold a Masters’ Degree in Business Administration which was taken as a mature student.  My professional background is in finance and, whilst my family was growing up, in teaching.  I became a Three Rivers District Councillor in 1988, serving for eight years and chairing the Environment Committee.  I was first elected to the County Council in 1989.  I stood down in 2001 to pursue a full-time career in school administration.  I was re-elected in 2009 and have served continuously since.
