My front-line role

I am the Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Hemel Hempstead St. Pauls division. The  ‘Your Community’ Community' section provides local service information, news, events, and contacts about the area.

St. Pauls is the electoral name given to the communities of Highfield and Adeyfield West which together with a small area of Town Ward comprise the county council division where I represent the interests of around 20,000 residents of the communities.

My County Council responsibilities

I have been on the County Council since May 2009, and at present, am the opposition portfolio holder for Health and Adult Services. Prior to 2011, I was opposition spokesperson for Children, Schools and Families. I presently sit on Health and Adult Care Cabinet Panel, Policy Resources and Performance Cabinet Panel, Audit Committee and Pensions Committee as well as attend meetings of the Shadow Cabinet and Full Council.

Roles on outside bodies

I am also a member of the Hertfordshire Police Authority, sitting on the Community Engagement Committee, Human Resources Committee, Police Remuneration Committee, Joint Collaboration Working Group, Complaints and Professional Standards Sub-Committee, and am also the Lead Member of the Authority for the Dacorum CSP.

I am a Trustee of the Hertfordshire Domestic Abuse Helpline Charitable Trust, a Member of the Dacorum Extended Education Support Centre Management Committee, Branch Official for Unite the Union, attend Neighbourhood Action Meetings in Adeyfield and Highfield, meetings of the Responsible Authorities Group for Dacorum and meetings of the Local Area Panel of County Councillors in addition to meetings of the Hemel Hempstead Liberal Democrats. I also take an interest in the work of the Dacorum Communities for Learning and the Highfield Youth Club Trust.

Personal, professional and political details

Having worked in both local government (reaching the position of the Entertainments Manager for the London Borough of Barking), and central government (Department of the Environment), as well as a number of working experiences in the private sector, for the last fifteen years of my work career, I was a Regional Industrial Organiser for the Transport and General Workers Union, having responsibility for members in the public sector, voluntary sector, private security industry and other private industries. I became a member of the Liberal Party in 1974, and was elected as a Liberal Democrat Councillor to the London Borough of Southwark in 1983.

I am married with one son and three grandchildren and have lived in Hemel Hempstead since 2002. On taking early retirement in 2004, I studied with the Open University, attaining a BA in History with first-class honours in 2010.
