Anthony Rowlands

I am delighted to represent Ashley and Cunningham Ward ( St Albans East Division ) on the County Council.

I have represented Ashley Ward on the City and District Council since 2006 and St Albans East on the County Council since May 2017. From 1986 until 2003 I represented Marshalswick South Ward on the District Council. I was County Councillor for St Albans North from 1993-1997 when I stood down to contest the St Albans Parliamentary seat.

On the District Council,   I am currently Chair of the Community, Environment and Leisure Scrutiny Committee and Spokesperson for Sport, Culture and Heritage. Until May 2011, I was Portfolio Holder for Sport and Leisure and, along with colleagues, guided through the new Westminster Lodge project to the commencement of construction.

Over the years, I have worked closely with residents on a wide range of local issues:  highway improvements and safety; footway and  grass verges repairs; resolving parking problems; social housing provision; planning issues; improving play areas and open spaces and  enhancing other community facilities.

I am a native of the Isle of Wight. A graduate of Oxford and Cambridge Universities, I spent the first part of my career teaching History in secondary schools. Between 2000 - 2015 I was a Director of CentreForum, an independent  liberal public policy think tank. It is now re-named the Education Policy Institute and I work part-time as an Executive Director.

In July 2015 I was appointed Mental Health Champion for the City and District of St Albans. In that capacity I work with a wide variety of local organisations and individuals to raise awareness and understanding, challenge stigma and improve mental health provision.

Anthony has two children:  Sam is a Solicitor and Alice is a qualified early years’ teacher. My late wife Harriet was a greatly respected and much loved teacher at Beaumont School until her retirement in 2013. We have placed a bench in Harriet’s memory in Clarence Park.

I am often seen running around the ward/division checking on local issues. I have completed 12 London Marathons and 33 St Albans Half Marathons.  I escape from politics and work on Saturday afternoons in the sometimes hapless sometimes joyful cause of supporting my beloved Burnley FC.
